A graduate of Temple University, Asia was inspired to become a teacher by her second grade teacher, Mrs. Ruben, who made learning both challenging and fun. During her time at Temple, she studied mathematics and education, and continued on to Teachers College. As a first-year teacher, Asia taught sixth grade math, where she was fortunate to be mentored by former principal David Krulwich. In her ten years, she has been an advisor for the class of 2016 (#PowerOftheBean) and has taught a variety of math classes including sixth and eighth grade math and science, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. Outside of her responsibilities at AMS, Asia has served as a professor at Relay Graduate school for second-year math teachers and also tutored students across a range of ages and abilities – young people struggling with their homework to graduate students in advanced mathematics. Regardless of who she is teaching, her philosophy remains the same – all students can learn math when they are consistently provided with rigorous and discovery-based instruction and the benchmark of success is students being able to apply their knowledge to new and unfamiliar problems. As a team leader, she applies the same beliefs when developing middle and high school math teachers. Although there are many, her favorite events of the school year will always be: trouncing the freshman in the annual football game, Pi5NY (the largest math tournament in NYC organized by AMS), and the alumni luncheon where she gets to see her former sixth grade students as college freshman. A graduate of Temple University, Asia was inspired to become a teacher by her second grade teacher, Mrs. Ruben, who made learning both challenging and fun. During her time at Temple, she studied mathematics and education, and continued on to Teachers College. As a first-year teacher, Asia taught sixth grade math, where she was fortunate to be mentored by former principal David Krulwich. In her ten years, she has been an advisor for the class of 2016 (#PowerOftheBean) and has taught a variety of math classes including sixth and eighth grade math and science, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. Outside of her responsibilities at AMS, Asia has served as a professor at Relay Graduate school for second-year math teachers and also tutored students across a range of ages and abilities – young people struggling with their homework to graduate students in advanced mathematics. Regardless of who she is teaching, her philosophy remains the same – all students can learn math when they are consistently provided with rigorous and discovery-based instruction and the benchmark of success is students being able to apply their knowledge to new and unfamiliar problems. As a team leader, she applies the same beliefs when developing middle and high school math teachers. Although there are many, her favorite events of the school year will always be: trouncing the freshman in the annual football game, Pi5NY (the largest math tournament in NYC organized by AMS), and the alumni luncheon where she gets to see her former sixth grade students as college freshman. She attended Lehman College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Early Childhood Education. Becoming a teacher was not always part of her original plan. She began working in education as a paraprofessional and spent seven years in that role. Over time, she realized how much she enjoyed working with students and wanted to continue growing in the education field. She later joined the NYC Teaching Fellows program and earned her master’s degree from Relay Graduate School of Education. One of Ms. Caminero’s favorite parts of being a teacher is getting to know her students and building meaningful relationships with them. While in college, Mr. Reynoso spent a semester studying abroad in Granada, Spain, where he lived with a wonderful host family and worked on learning Spanish. Learning Spanish continues to be one of his biggest goals—and challenges—as he hopes to become fluent enough to better communicate with his grandparents, students, and their families. Mr. Reynoso loves reading, watching movies, and listening to music. Some of his favorite authors are Ernest Hemingway and James Michener. He's been part of the Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science family for over 15 years, with 11 years in the classroom teaching humanities, science, and now 6th grade math — bringing his total DOE experience to 16 years and counting. A proud graduate of Hunter College (English Language Arts) and City College (Childhood Education, TESOL, and School Leadership), Mr. Rivera has spent his career turning "I hate math" into "wait, that's actually kind of cool” and “I love math!” When he's not solving for x, Mr. Rivera is probably planning his next trip abroad, getting a workout in before sunrise, or exploring a new beach on his travels. Fluent in Spanish and able to hold his own in Portuguese, he loves connecting with students and families from all backgrounds — a nod to his own Puerto Rican roots. In 2022, he received his second masters in Administration from Hunter University, and is back at Hunter getting his certification in Special Education. In his spare time, Mr. Taylor enjoys spending time hiking, playing golf, traveling with his family in all types of different places.
